Roaming, travel eSIM, or local SIM: compare the full trip cost

The cheapest headline price is not always the cheapest trip. Compare the full stay, the data you can actually use, and the cost of losing calls or verification messages on your home number.

Calculate the carrier baseline

Multiply the daily roaming fee by every day on which the carrier can charge it. Then add pass activation fees, data overages, voice charges, and any countries excluded from the pass. Use the calculator on the homepage for the first estimate.

Check whether roam-like-at-home rules apply

EU and EEA travelers may use domestic allowances across participating countries, but fair-use limits, permanent-roaming rules, satellite connections, and excluded destinations still matter. The United Kingdom and non-EU destinations depend on the carrier contract. Read the current operator message and tariff before travel.

Compare an eSIM on the same unit

Convert every option to total trip cost and price per usable GB. Include validity, top-up price, taxes, exchange rate, hotspot allowance, and the cost of a backup. A low per-GB plan that expires early may be worse than a slightly dearer plan that covers the entire trip.

Protect calls and verification messages

A data-only travel eSIM can coexist with a home SIM on many phones. Keep the home line enabled for incoming SMS if your carrier allows it without triggering roaming data, and make the travel eSIM the mobile-data line. Test this configuration before departure.
