Build a two-network remote-work travel kit
Remote work fails when every backup depends on the same network, device, or power source. Build for one failure at a time: venue Wi-Fi, local mobile coverage, account access, or power.
Map the work that cannot wait
List the calls, uploads, repositories, and systems that must work at specific times. Video quality, screen sharing, cloud backup, and large uploads need more stable upstream capacity than messaging or document editing.
Use independent primary and backup paths
Pair venue Wi-Fi with a mobile plan on a different underlying network. If the trip is business-critical, confirm that the backup supports hotspot use and has enough high-speed data for at least one working day. Two eSIM brands on the same carrier are not independent.
Make account recovery work offline
Use an authenticator or hardware key where supported, store one-time backup codes securely, and avoid making a roaming SMS the only recovery method. Verify that the home number can still receive essential messages without becoming the data line.
Run a departure test
Connect each path, make a test call, upload a representative file, verify corporate VPN behavior, and switch between networks. Record support contacts, APN details, and activation steps where they remain available without internet access.
Pack for power and failure
Carry the correct adapters, a charged power bank that complies with airline rules, charging cables, and offline copies of critical travel and work details. A working network is not useful when the only device is flat.
